The Russkaya bay

The bay “Russkaya” (Russian) is situated at South-Western part of the Avachinskiy Gulf. It was marked at the maps by its local  Itelmen name “ Akhomten” until 1952.

“It shoots out for two and a half miles  in south-western direction and it’s width is half of a mile. The shores are rocky at the beginning with very stony northern part which has big scars and shelves and low-lying southern part. There are mountains around the shore and a lot of stones at the tops of the mountains. These mountains are called “Seals’ shallow” because of the seals which are easily observed from here. The depth supposedly is small with ground, stones and sand at the shallow… “(The captain of the corps of the marine navigators, P.I.  Iliyin ). The bay “Russian” (Akhomten) was used by ships as the place for temporal stop during poor sailing conditions. Ships take here fresh water for their sailing and according to the words of the sailors this water kept fresh and tasty for a long time.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and increased danger of the sailing at Kamchatka waters the bay “Russian” became one of the main stations of the forming caravans from cargo ships with strategic goods en route from the ports of Canada and the United States to Vladivostok. By the time of development of the oceanic fishing  and fishing and fishing-processing fleets at the 70s the bay “Russian” was used actively for taking fresh water from natural reservoirs, next for transshipment of the fish production, fishery equipment, crew-exchange. Narrow, deeply shooting out the bay “Russian” resembles in form the fiord by its steep mountain slopes. It’s one of the most picturesque places in the Petropavlovsk region. There was paved a sea route for tourists.
