The bay “Zhirovaya”

The bay “Zhirovaya” (Fatty) is situated between Krutoy and Razdelitelniy forelands. This bay at first Russian maps was called “Inadin” by its Itelmen origin. Initial Russian place name was Yuzhnaya Zhirovaya(Southern-Fatty). Regular trips of the Avachinian fat herring to this place served as a reason for naming the bay this way. The herring fishery at this bay lasted up to 50 years of the 20 century. The bay deeply embedded in the mainland in the north-west direction. The bay has almost parallel coasts with a for miles length and more than a mile  width. Its coast at the top turns sharply at right angles to the north and becomes low place taking Vilyucha river, which originates at the foot of the volcano with the same name. The bay got its place-name after the volcano Vilyuchinskiy which has isolated position and serves as an excellent reference mark with its characteristic silhouette cone when approaching the shore. Previous, Itelmen place-name was Niashkin. First detailed map of the Vilyuchinskaya bay was made by the captain of the marine navigator officers’ corps P.I.  Iliyin.  Its description of the bay remained and sounded like this: the bay Vilyuchinskaya spreads in north-west direction it 4 miles and its width is about 1 mile. Its top joins to the foot of the famous bald mountain Vilyuchinskaya and the bay take the river with the same name. A shore at the top of the bay is low but with narrow cobblestoned lowland which consists of cliffs and stones. The bay locked away from the sea by shelf distinguished from northern part and called “Fake isles”. The bay Viluchinskaya was called “Severnaya Zhirovaya” by local population until 50s of the 20th century. It was used as a seasonal base by Petropavlovsk fishermen for fishing and fish-processing of the Avachinian herring.
