The Stanitskiy foreland

The Stanitskiy foreland is located in the south-western part of the Avachinskaya Gulf and serves as one of the main landmarks at the passage into the bay. It was named after the captain II rank F. E. Stanitskiy who was Kamchatka governor at 1822-1828. The name was given supposedly by British military commander of the frigate "Blossom" Captain FW Beachy, who docked at the port in 1826 and 1827 respectively. This cape was marked under the name “Kayuma” in navigator I.F. Yelagin’s map at 1740.  It’s possible that the word “Kayuma” is of Yakut origin and its translation is "rocks" or "a high rocky cliff”.  This designation of the foreland was used more often than the others until the late 19th century.
