It is deeply embedded in the mainland in the north-west direction. The bay has almost parallel coasts. The bay was named from the Viluchinsky volcano which isolated position and the characteristic silhouette of the cone serves as an excellent reference point when approaching the shore.  Itelmen name of the bay is Niashkin. The first detailed map of the bay was performed by captain P.I.Il'in. Preserved a description of the bay: "Vilyuchinskaya Bay extends to the shore on the north-west for four miles, a width of about one mile..." Until the 50s of the twentieth century bay Vilyuchinskaya in the local language was known as The North Fatty bay. It was used as a seasonal base of fishermen for fishing for herring.
